Hi all...
I'm thinking of trying LOTRO....
I've spent the last few weeks in DDO and come to the conclusion that its not the playstyle for me. Class restrictions are teh suk as well as grouping requirements and it being a gear oriented game.
So, how tedious and/or grindy is LOTRO? Is all xp is quest based, so there is no grinding possible? I don't mind AC style grinding. How tedious are the quests? I'm not much of a fan of travel-back-and-forth-multiple-times type quests so that would kill it for me.
What kinda character solos and advances well?
Thanks, maybe see you in-game

The majority of your xps come from quests. Grinding mobs will NOT advance you very fast at all.
On the plus side, usually, when you enter a quest hub, you get a group of quests centered in roughly the same area, so it's easy to go and so several quests all together, and go back and turn in at once.
Drop rates for quest items are very high (if you are in the right area--check your map)--like 50-100% of the time, so even "gather these items" quests go quickly.
Most quest items do not use up pack space either--they are stored in your log. Yay!
You DO have to READ the quests, as what you are asked to do isn't always just "go kill this thing".
There ARE "fed-ex" quests where you travel, but generally, they are directing you to another quest hub, or aren't very far to travel (book quests can sometimes be the exception to this). They also are not the bulk of the quests, unless you start in the Shire. The Shire has a TON of those quests (but you get a run buff doing them, too).
To my knowledge, all the classes will solo well, except perhaps the minstrel (healing class).
Edit: There are a number of folks who can send you a 10-day free trial key, but they would need your email address. There's a stickied thread on the LOTRO forum with the list of people who have them. That way, you could see if you like the game or not. :) |

Hey Smacx, Pach hit everything correctly for ya.
There are those quests that can sent you right back to the same spot, but perhaps now you need to kill a boss or something. Except in the Book quest!! There is alot of going back and forth, from this point to that point. But this is where its fun because IF your reading your enjoying the lore of the game!
There are areas you will find that will have more group quests than others. As I am sure you have seen we do have group quests on Sat, where we all get together and help get those out of your log books for ya. There are some instances along the way, and we have enough folks that can run those as well.
We also seem to have alt's galore in LOTRO. So finding someone around your level is not too hard. Additionally help is always just a post away on these boards. If your playing during the day, DK, Poco, Trekk are on pretty regularly and are always a good source for help. The evening times vary with folks on. It has not been a game where folks have come in and rushed to 65 (max lvl), seems folks are really taking time to enjoy the game. There are however, 4 of us that are 65 now, and we are always there to help if/when needed.
There is no group requirements so to speak. Groups in LOTRO consist of 3, 6, 12 and a couple of end games from the orginal release that are 24. Your log book will show you what type of group is suggested for that quest. The great thing they did recently was to change Book 1 so that the entire thing is soloable!!! If you are soloing a book quest and its an instance, or difficult area, they give you this huge buff that increases your Morale (health) and your dps. Your like the amazing killing machine....lol.
There are so many quests that you could literally lvl to max without completing one group quest. They have truly tried to make it a very solo friendly game.
Pach is also correct, there are folks with keys, and the game is completely downloadable from the LOTRO website. I believe there is even a free-trial there but those limit your access to many things in the game. Getting a key is the best way or even purchasing from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Shadows-Angmar-Pc/dp/B000GR9P76/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279804026&sr=8-4 and wow was I surprised to see the collectors editions are back up in the $30.00 range. About 6 mos ago you could get those for 9.99 as well.
We would love to have you join us,
A. |

| Pach mentioned minstrel as being hard to solo but I have to disagree. I have a level 51 minstrel and she is a ton of fun to play and my main character. If she were hard to solo, I probably would not still have her as a main. :) |

Its fun so far, and thanks for the invite to the guild!
Andrew AKA TeenyTinyTbo (my son) and I (John) rolled burglars last night and made our way thru noobville. We're now lvl 7 (WooT!) and we look exactly alike...lol...2 lil hobbits scurrying around the countryside backstabbing anything that moves.
Anyone available that can craft low level critical strike daggers? =) |

| Smacx, I have a char that can make you some daggers, but if you are on trial accounts, getting them to you may be a challenge... |
